Supa Cindy
Interview by Sarah Etienne

cindy1.jpg (29368 bytes)The Multi-Cultural Mami, Supa Cindy, of WEDR 99 Jamz is one of the most popular radio personalities in South Florida today. I was honored when Supa Cindy took some time out of her busy schedule to sit down and talk to me about her exciting career as a radio personality.

Supa Cindy was born and raised in Miami, Florida until the age of 11. Her family then moved to Queens, New York where she completed her formal education. Soon after, Cindy returned to South Florida.

When Cindy returned to Miami, she developed her love of writing and became interested in a career in the media field. While working at Florida Power and Light, Cindy obtained a degree in Radio and Television Production. She started working in television doing camera work for channel 10 channel and 17 while maintaining her position at FP&L. As luck may have it, a close friend of Cindy’s, Teddy T., who worked at WEDR with Al B. Sylk invited her to aide him with the production of the show. Cindy’s intense involvement in the show resulted in DJ Al B. Sylk naming her “Supa Cindy.”

When Al B Sylk resigned from WEDR, Supa Cindy seized the opportunity to become a radio personality and asked to be considered for the position. When Flex, “The Big Lip Bandit" was hired as Sylk's replacement, Supa Cindy was introduced as his co-star. Although the two never worked together, the chemistry they shared allowed them to become instant friends.

Like Sylk, Big Lip had a special name for Supa Cindy, “The Multi-Cultural Mami.” When I asked Supa Cindycindyflex.jpg (46186 bytes) how he came up with that name she replied, “ Big Lip has a gift for naming people! I guess that since my  Father is Haitian and my mother is from Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) he started calling me Multi-Cultural, which I am, and that’s how it came about.”

Working in Radio may seem like the perfect job but just like any other job it has it’s pros and cons. “People hear us on the radio and think were are in here partying but a lot of work goes into making the show happen. You have to watch what you say because there are a lot of people that you can offend, ” Supa Cindy. I asked Supa Cindy what she enjoyed the most about working in radio and she replied, “Meeting the people, when people come up to me and say ‘my daughter loves you, you’re such a role model’ that makes me say maybe there’s a reason why I’m here. I know I talk about the haters a lot but the haters just make you strive to be a better person.” However, just as inspiring as it may be to work as a radio personality, it can also be frustrating. “I’m a private person I’m not this diva who likes a lot of attention and I don’t like everyone knowing who I am when I’m on the street. Now that I’ve been on TV and in pictures, people recognize me and I can hear them whispering ‘that’s Supa Cindy’ when I go somewhere like publix. (Laugh),” Supa Cindy.

Supa Cindy had a few words of advice for anyone who was are want to follow their dreams and pursue the career of their choice.  “Whether you want to be in television or be a doctor, try to go to conventions to network, read magazines that specify what you’re interested in and focus on what you are doing. Whatever you’re into, be into it 100%,” Supa Cindy.

cindy2.jpg (46206 bytes)Supa Cindy is a very intelligent, talented and beautiful woman who knows what she wants and goes after it. During her short time working as a radio personality, she has captured the attention of thousands of South Floridians during her show with The Big Lip Bandit at 6:00pm –10:00pm Monday-Friday on 99 Jamz and is making her mark in the entertainment industry. The future looks bright for the Multi-Cultural Mami and we wish her the best of luck in her endeavors.
