Red Rat
Article by Sarah Etienne

The talented, fair skinned, dance hall artist, Wallace Wilson, affectionately named “Red Rat” has been on the Reggae music scene almost his entire life. Most famously known for his hit “Tight Up Skirt,” from his debut album "Oh No....It's Red Rat," the artist is now looking forward to creating new hits and becoming a pop icon like Shaggy or Beenie Man.

During the press release party on October 13, 2002, Red Rat celebrated the launch of his official website www.RedRat.com. The entertainer has made a name for himself throughout the world as a dancehall artist however, he still has not reached the mega star status that he craves. I had the chance to speak to Red Rat and he discussed his past and his aspirations for the future

Wallace Wilson was born in Jamaica where he grew up with a musical family who was always performing. At the tender age of four, Wilson was given his first opportunity to sing on stage with his brothers and he loved the experienced. Since then, his family helped little Wallace Wilson develop his talent and grow into a well-rounded musician. “They taught me how to play instruments. I play four different instruments. I play the Drums, Bass, Keyboard and guitar and my oldest brother taught me how to sing,” Red Rat. Due to his early training and determination, he has been recording professionally since the age of 12!

During Wilson's early years as an entertainer he went by the stage name “Mice.” He explained that it is part of the Jamaican culture to give someone a nickname based on a person’s attributes. As a child Wilson said that he resembled a mouse, “ When I was real small and played soccer people used to say that I looked like a little rat,” Red Rat. Yet, there were at least two other entertainers using the stage name “Mice” so the aspiring star would have to find another name. A fellow entertainer advised Wilson to change his name from “Mice” to “Red Rat” and as they say, the rest was history.

Because of his talent, mass appeal and great looks; it is not surprising that he has a fan base across the globe. Though Red Rat is internationally known as a Dancehall artist, he would not mind following in the musical footsteps of Shaggy and Beenie Man. This rising star knows the importance of versatility in the entertainment business. He has participated in many fashion shows and is looking forward to doing films and television shows. Though Red Rat’s music is slightly more hardcore than that of the current popular reggae artists heard on the airways, he is confident that he will be able to make the transition.

He currently lives between South Florida and Jamaica, traveling frequently between the two. You can believe you will see and hear more of the talented entertainer in the near future. For starters, this entertainer as well as many other popular Reggae artists performed at the Reggae Fest on November 10th, 2002. Don’t forget to check out Red Rat’s official website at www.RedRat.com for more information on this incredible artists and updates on upcoming performances.
