Brief Facts: Aruba is located in the southern Caribbean about 18 miles off the coast of
Venezuela. Spain was the first country to explore the island in 1499 and later the
Netherlands claimed Aruba. After a brief rule by England, the Dutch regained
control in 1816, and it officially became part of the Netherlands Antilles in 1845.
On Jan. 1, 1986, Aruba separated from the Netherlands Antilles but decided in 1994 not to seek full independence. The Dutch control Aruba's defense and foreign affairs, but all internal matters are handled by an island government. Description: The flag of Aruba has four colors: yellow, blue, red and white. The flag of Aruba consists of a four-pointed red star with a white outline, in the upper left corner, set against a sea-blue background with two parallel yellow stripes. The star symbolizes the four points of the compass and more than 40 different nationalities living in Aruba. The red color of the star symbolizes love of country, and white represents the white sandy beaches. The blue color of the flag denotes the color of the surrounding sea and the two yellow stripes on the flag symbolize abundance. |
