The British Virgin Islands flag was adopted on November 15, 1960. As a British colony, the British Virgin Islands flag combines the British Blue ensign with the Union Flag in the upper left corner, and the coat of arms of the British Virgin Islands.

The coat of arms features Saint Ursula and the lamps of her virgin followers, which gives the island its name. Another variation of the British Virgin Islands flag is the red ensign or red background with the coat of arms of the country. The red ensign is to be flown on board vessels either registered in the British Virgin Islands or by vessels visiting the country.
