San Francisco Carnival exists as the festival atmosphere seems to be so utterly infectious. The San Francisco Carnival began in 1978 after a group of artists and musicians decided they wanted their very own carnival. San Francisco Carnival was thus established by the San Francisco Cultural Arts Traditions, known as SFCAT for short. This is a non profit organisation which aims to bring people together through music, arts and culture. San Francisco Carnival Dates & Parade RouteThe parade brings together African, Caribbean and Latin American tastes in music, dance and cuisine. The San Francisco Carnival normally takes place in May around Memorial Day weekend. The San Francisco Carnival is on a large scale and covers seven blocks. It is located along Harrison Street and can boast many attractions. The San Francisco Carnival takes place May 25th and May 26th, 2013. View Larger Map These include the children's area and the green zone. There are two live stages too for musical performances for traditional Latin American and African genres. Thousands of people flock to the festival for the chance to breathe in the passion and charm offered by many authentic dance styles. There is the cha cha cha, Tango, Mambo and Cumbia, not forgetting the iconic Samba dance either. You can sample food or traditional crafts, as well as purchase souvenirs to bring some carnival flavour home with you. You can learn these dance too if you are a novice in the Dance pavilion or try your hands at the drums in the drum grove. Face painting and health screening are also present at the San Francisco Carnival and don't think there's going to be a break in the live entertainment – it's non stop! The parade will draw in 400,000 visitors who will come to see 70 different groups that compose the array of sounds and colours.
