The major event of the Boston Carnival is the King of Carnival and Queen of Carnival competitions. This is for the most extravagant, elegant and colourful costumes on the parade. The on-stage performance of the competitors is also taken into account.

The Steel band Panorama has recently been off the calendar, yet has frequently pulled in the crowds at past Boston Carnival occasions. Calypso music dominated the musical scene in the Caribbean.

The whole party gets kicked off with the J'ouvert celebration which is shortly followed by the parade. This starts from Martin Luther Boulevard and comes to a climax in Dorchester's Franklin Park in late August.
