The very first occurrences of the Carnival Tampa saw the festival celebrated from December 26th, usually referred to as boxing day or St. Stephen's day, until Lent. There are now many different aspects to the carnival and these are going on right the way throughout the year.

As part of the Carnival Tampa, there are beauty competitions, parades, musically orientated concerts and competitions, balls and street jump-ups. Carnival is seen as a manner in which life can be celebrated and thus it encompasses the entire island, spectators included. Calypso and Reggae music form the basis for these occasions and the main events are all focused around these styles.
